Susan King to have two quilts in 2015 International Quilt Festival

Susan Fletcher King will have two quilts showing at the International Quilt Festival in 2015. The first is "Jacob's Treasures, a 40" x 40" quilt which will be displayed in the special "Affinity" exitibit. This is an invitational juried show co-curated by Leslie Tucker Jenison and Jamie Fingal.

The second quilt is "The Parable of the Dragon and the Sheep", measuring 24" x 60". This will be appearing as a finalist in the juried IQA show, "A World of Beauty."

FiberVoices featured in Quilting Arts

Artist and writer Lynn Krawczyk wrote about us this month (October/November 2013 issue 65) of Quilting Arts Magazine.in her regular column, Replenishing Your Creative Well.  It was a nicely balanced combination of interview and pictures.  We're all very happy to have been featured in this, one of our favorite magazines about the fiber arts.

Final Days of my Residency at The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft

My artists' residency ended August 31.  I feel that this was the single best artistic experience I have ever had.  In so many ways it allowed me to grow artistically and opened my eyes to the many wonderful things which are happening in the art world.  I will always treasure that experience and I hope that the incoming artists for the 2013-2014 year have an equally good time!

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) presents In Residence, an exhibition of work created by the eight artists who began their residencies at HCCC in 2012: Tarina Frank, Chanda Glendinning, Susan Fletcher King, Jessica Kreutter, Susannah Mira, Jaydan Moore, Robert Thomas Mullen, and Rachelle Vasquez.
Each fall, the In Residence exhibition celebrates work by resident artists, derived from or inspired by their residencies at HCCC. This exhibition demonstrates the high level of creativity and skill reflected in each resident artist’s work. While engaging the greater world of contemporary craft, the HCCC Artist Residency Program gives its selected resident artists a studio space within an environment that encourages collaboration, experimentation, and a forum in which to exchange ideas and receive advice from peers.

At the opening, each of us (artists) had the opportunity to give a short talk about our work and the exhibit.  This was really fun and we had a much larger crowd than anyone expected.  It felt good to see so many turn out for the show and everyone seemed really interested in what each of us had to say.  Good memories!

 

Rituals exhibit to travel to The Netherlands

The invitational exhibit "Rituals" (created by Dinner@Eight's Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison) was so well received at the Houston International Quilt Festival this October/November 2012 that it will fly across the pond to the 'Open European Quilt Championships' in the Netherlands. Show dates are May 3-5, 2013.  Both Susan Fletcher King and Linda Teddlie Minton have work in the exhibit.

"5" A Pop-Up Show featuring HCCC Artist Residents

The current Artists in Residence at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft are having an exhibit just down the street from the HCCC.  The show features new works by Tarina Frank, Chanda Glendinning, Susan Fletcher King, Jaydan Moore and Robert Thomas Mullen.

It's a "pop-up" show, only open for two days, so mark your calendars and don't miss it.

Yes, both Linda Minton and I have been juried into the next Dinner @ 8 show - this one is called "Rituals" and the new size (24" x 60") was a challenge.  I really like working with strong verticals or strong horizontal formats, but the idea that I had for this theme just didn't lend itself to the new size.  So - back to the drawing board - or should I say - deisgn wall?  I am pleased with my final results and so thrilled to once again be included in this show!  And yes, we are thrilled that Moore's Sewing Centers at the Long Beach show, and Havel's Sewing at the Houston show are sponsoring this effort. Their support is hugely appreciated.

"Rituals" entries accepted

Both Linda Teddlie Minton and Susan Fletcher King of FiberVoices have had their entries accepted into the juried invitational exhibit, "Rituals", curated by Dinner at Eight Artists' Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison.  The exhibit will debut at the July, 2012 International Quilt Festival, Long Beach, and will also show at the Houston International Quilt Market and Festival in October/November, 2012.

The Space Between - Interview with Susan Fletcher King

I am so excited to have been juried into the invitational exhibit "The Space Between" - co-curated by Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison.

Gossip Challenge

Connie Fahrion started this challenge based on the old game "gossip" or "telephone". She chose a photograph she took while on a winter-time retreat at the childhood home of Liz Broussard in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.  Bayou Teche, runs along the back of the property. The size she chose was 6” x 18” landscape orientation

After her initial interpretation, she passed her quilt to the next person in the rotation through the group.  Each person only saw the piece immediately before her and did an interpretation on it.

I decided to work with squares and rectangles to flesh out tree trunks and leaves using silk fabrics on a cotton Ikat-like fabric.  I based my composition on another one I created of the same scene worked with dyed and painted coffee filters and thread trash.

Because I was so enamored with Connie's piece, it was difficult for me to not duplicate it!

I went with a literal translation of a stark, dreary winter's day on the bayou.  Several layers of chiffon and netting were burned to create barren trees and blowing leaves.

I had a vague impression of swampish trees and leaves and perhaps cool temperatures from looking at Liz Broussard's piece.  Liz was also very specific in pointing out the one or two spots of red that she put in her piece.  Based on that, I interpreted my piece with red autumn leaves pushed directionally in a cool wind.

I wanted to capture the "feel" of Thinking of Fall so I based my design on Susan's mottled tan background, her top left to bottom right sweeping movement, and her red (leaves) color. Her addition of tiny gold beads added detail so I quilted in the small areas of my checkered background. I interpreted Susan's thin wispy twig branches by couching Razzle Dazzle for my long delicate wind currents.

When  I saw Nancy's work, I felt the melody flowing across the piece and associated it with written music and the treble clef.

Mary Ann's musical theme brought to mind some old children's illustrations of Wind.  I picked out her baby-pinks and blues to repeat in my piece.  This was a challenging piece for me, because of the unusual size and shape, but I loved the results from the whole group.

Linda's was so wonderful I almost had too many ideas.  I didn't know the title at the time but I wanted to carry over movement and some of the color she created in her piece.  I asked myself what could move around on the wind and came up with the bubbles.   After all who doesn't love seeing what shape and color their bubble will come out.

Fish Challenge

Periodically, our group decides to do a challenge. .  Our first challenge took place in 2009.  The guidelines, which were selected by pulling words out of paper bag, were:

Size:    9”x12” portrait
Fabric:  a piece of the same chartreuse silk
Theme:  Fish

“Mola Fish”

I wanted to try a contemporary mola technique for my Fish piece. The two fish images are based on a barracuda shape. The silk coral and other leaves were from my imagination. Since most underwater landscapes tend to be horizontal, as are fish, I found the vertical format to be more dramatic and challenging. “Mola Fish” was created with cotton and silk fabrics, reverse appliqué, hand embroidery, machine quilting, and satin-stitched edges.

A lot of my experimental work has to do with thread trash application so I used this challenge to work beyond my limit with thread trash.  I simply wanted to see what it would look like if I laid on thread trash beyond my normal expectation.  So my goal became to distort the composition with thread trash until I felt like I had lost it.  It was a real luxury and pleasure to be able to do it.”

When we selected the subject for this challenge (fish), I was thrilled because for years
I had kept both salt and freshwater aquariums.  My intention with this piece was to
portray the idea of a fish "sort of" contained in an aquarium.  This piece was done with raw-edge applique and used both cotton and silk fabric.

Since I am a Pisces, the fish image is almost a part of me.  Using my astrological sign was a good place to start.  I enjoyed working in some dyed cheesecloth and machine quilting the fantasy plants.

Incorporates a digitally altered photograph of the Grand Canyon, cotton, silk, Dye-Na-Flow paints, machine quilting, and hand embroidery.  The irregularly-shaped piece is faced rather than traditionally bound.
